songs to listen to when you've given into bread baking

As one of my very first blog posts, I wrote about my love for concerts and music and that has not wavered during this time. In fact, it’s only gotten stronger. I feel as if I’m listening to more music now than I ever was before. I’d contribute that to the copious amount of walks I take a day and my increased time spent outside reading. During times like this, I turn to music as a form of comfort. By listening to old favorites and discovering new ones, it calms me in my times of distress and uncertainty.

So here are some of my favorite songs that can accompany your many activities during this time, including but not limited to baking bread and taking long drives. I’ve been listening to a lot of my old summer playlists to remind me of happier times and I hope they can shed some happiness for you as well!

1. When you just need to get out of the house: Rearview by Bad Suns

If you need a good “driving with all the windows down on the highway" song, this is it. Take some time for yourself to get out of the house and simply go on a drive down the highway. It'll help calm yourself.

2. For time to be still with your thoughts: Holocene by Bon Iver

This song is nothing short of soft and serene. The perfect tune to play in the background as you lie still in bed.

3. To drown out your sibling playing video games in the room next to yours: Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis

If you put this song on full-blast, guaranteed there is NO chance you hear a peep out of your sibling playing Fortnite or whatever it is kids play these days.

4. Dance party of one: Lip Gloss by Lil Mama

I don’t know about you, but I thoroughly enjoy a dance party of one, especially if Lil Mama is involved. Crank up this song and just GROOVE.

5. When you need a rewind: Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty

Sometimes it’s good to try and take your mind off the present with a song from the past.

6. When you need to smile: Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles

How can you listen to this song and not smile? I personally need a little reminder to smile during these uncertain times.

7. When you want to transport yourself to a Broadway musical: Alexander Hamilton by the Hamilton Cast

Even though we can’t physically be in a theater watching a play or musical right now, we can at least pretend we are. Side note: if you haven’t seen the video of the original Hamilton cast performing this song as a surprise to a mega-fan, please do so now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IeZeXHvvTqc

8. For Zoom happy hour: Bottoms Up by Trey Songz ft. Nicki Minaj

Suddenly I’m 12 again listening to this song (which I most definitely should not have been at that age). If you can’t be with your gals and guys at a party together, at least you can pretend like you are. My drink of choice lately has been honestly any wine I can get my hands on.

9. When you’re inevitably baking banana or sourdough bread: Fallingwater by Maggie Rogers

If you’re learning to bake bread during this isolation period, you are not alone. I haven’t succumbed to the trend yet, but it’s only a matter of time…

10. A song for when you’re bored: Are You Bored Yet? by Wallows feat. Clairo

-The name says it all.

I hope you all stay well, healthy and safe!
